Hong Kong Regulatory & Tax Updates (2026)

Hong Kong's two-tier profits tax, absence of VAT and capital gains tax, and new mandatory iXBRL e-filing requirements make it one of Asia's most business-friendly — yet increasingly compliance-intensive — jurisdictions.

Profits Tax

The two-tier rate structure applies 8.25% on the first HK$2M of assessable profits, and 16.5% on the remainder.

No VAT/GST

Hong Kong levies no value-added tax, goods and services tax, withholding tax on dividends, or capital gains tax — a significant advantage for holding and treasury structures.

FSIE Rules

The Foreign-Sourced Income Exemption regime now imposes stricter economic substance requirements. Companies relying on offshore income exemptions must demonstrate genuine activity in Hong Kong.

Mandatory E-filing

From April 2026, profits tax returns must be filed electronically in iXBRL format, requiring companies to update their financial reporting processes.
